Information for new students

Congratulations on your right to study and great to have you in the (bio)chemist community!
The beginning of university studies and moving possibly into foreign city might spark different types of questions. What is studying like in the University? What is a student organization? How to get to know new people? When you start University studies, you might notice that studying isn’t only about sitting at lectures and having exams. You will get answers to these different questions at the latest during your orientation week! To welcome you on your first day you will have student tutors and during the week you will get to know our student organization activities in a variety of ways.
Student organization for majors in chemistry or biochemistry we call us Turun Yliopiston kemistit TYK ry (Chemists at University of Turku). Our student organization organizes activities for different preferences: parties, nature trips, academic game known as “kyykkä”, game nights, sitz… In short, anything that the members are enthusiastic about participating in.
The student tutors of the organization make sure that the new students are in the right place in the right time and that all the practical matters are taken care of. The student tutors introduce their freshman (piltit) to both the university student culture and other students studying different majors. They will introduce you to TYK rys three different premises, Orbitaali (Aurum), Vetokaappi (Pharmacity) and Kraatteri (Q-talo). In these premiseses you can utilize member benefits and hang out with other (bio)chemists.
It is wise to be active in your own freshman group’s activities and ask the student tutors as many questions as needed. Before you know it, you’ll be surrounded by friends who are better than the last who will help you make your university studies a memorable experience. In the end everyone will find their place in university life so you no need to get worried about it.
So don’t hesitate to join us!
